56. Mapping Mnemonics

Materials: none

Time: 25 minutes

Suggested Grade Levels: 3–6

Mnemonics are memory-aid devices that can be used for information retention. Elementary children often learn Never Eat Soggy Waffles or Never Eat Slimy Worms to memorize the compass directions (North, East, South, West), or HOMES to represent the Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior). TOADS on LOGS can be used to remember all the parts of a map: title, orientation, author, date, scale, legend, outline, grid, and source. To remember the countries in Central America, use the sayings, By Gosh Eating Spicy Hot Nachos Causes Real Pain or Big Gorillas Eat Hotdogs, Not Cold Pizza (Belize, Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, Panama). Now, challenge students to make their own mnemonics to memorize the countries in Africa!
